Pour ce troisième webinaire, qui se déroulera en ligne le jeudi 22 janvier 12h00 à 14h00, et en anglais nous nous intéresserons aux politiques de la gestion des nitrates aux Pays-Bas, en miroir à la trajectoire bretonne.

The ANR GreenSeas research project team is pleased to invite you to the second session of Rendez-vous GreenSeas. This series of webinars is an opportunity to invite national or international specialists to present their work on topics central to the project. This third webinar will take place online Thursday January 22nd, from 12:00 to 14:00. We will focus on the trajectory of nutrients and nitrate policy and politics in the Netherlands.
Abstract:
The Netherlands are a small country with intensive agriculture and a well-organised agricultural sector. Agriculture is a major source of eutrophication, a widespread problem in the Netherlands, and a major contributor to the bad state of many Natura 2000 areas. Currently, it does not implement the EU Water framework directive and the Birds and Habitat directive correctly. Hence, there is a risk it will have to pay heavy EU fines.
Avoiding fines is made difficult by the rise of populism in the Netherlands, which I define as an approach that prioritises increasing political support over solving problems and which, in the Netherlands, includes polarisation, anti-European sentiments, and the rise and fall of new political parties, such as the “Farmer-Citizen Movement” party. Resolving the issues will most likely require action on two fronts: the development of viable business opportunities for sustainable farming, and more cooperation between the national political parties nationally.
